Employee Referral Programs / Networks

Sites that leverage personal networks to refer candidates is a new twist on the traditional Employee Referral Program. Whether these turn out to be a fad or a trend will be decided over time. The boundary between e-referral networks and social networking tools has started to blur. Many sites below began as social networks, and then expanded into the referral networks / job posting space.

  • eWanted - This site enters categories far beyond the recruitment space and is edging towards becoming a marketplace.
  • ForumJobs - integrated referral-based job networking and hiring system that lets you tap directly into your employees' and contacts' networks
  • H3.com - uses emails to forward recruiter-generated job needs along, with financial incentives shared by all intermediaries if someone along the line is hired; founded by former Monster president Hans Gieskes
  • Jobster - Launched early 2005, probably the best-funded of all the players in this category. They have morphed into a job board of sorts, as well as acquiring the blog portal Recruiting.com in 2006.
  • Jobthread - Employers post a job, attach a referral reward, and send the job out to their contacts. Recipients can apply or forward on the job to others. If the job ends up making its way to someone who applies and is hired for the job, everyone in the middle who helped make the connection shares the referral reward. In 2005, charged no fees but expects to charge a fee comparable to a single job board posting. Founded by Eric Yoon, former Product Manager for HotJobs.com (pre-Yahoo!) and The New York Times Job Market.
  • KarmaOne - like Jobthread, another startup (beta launched May 2005) where employers offer bounties to encourage referrals of job-seekers; founded by Auren Hoffman
  • LinkedIn - Better known to recruiting researchers as a business networking site to search for names/profiles of industry professionals, it launched a referral network-based job posting tool in 2006.
  • Referrals.com - Formerly known as Referral Networks and funded in part by Hearst Interactive Media, the online arm of the consumer magazine group publisher, this employment referral programs vendor teamed with recruiting software player PureCarbon and is HR-XML compliant. However, it is now focused on the real estate referral market.
  • TeamRewards - Formerly known as CareerRewards, this open referral network attracted over $3 million in venture capital in 2000 to gain visibility.
  • Yorz - Similar to Jobthread, a referral network that lets recruiters post their needs, specifying a dollar amount as a bounty if someone supplies the selected person, open to the public.
  • Zoom Information - Better known to recruiting researchers as a site to search for profiles of executives, it launched a referral network / job tool in 2006.
