January 2001 Recruiting-Online Newsletter

If you liked the newsletter below, then you should definitely click here to subscribe FREE.

Greetings from your Internet Recruiting guru at www.Recruiting-
Online.com, in cooperation with
www.CommunityClassifieds.com/Employment

This free email Newsletter is sent once per month to keep you updated
about recruiting tips and tools available online and elsewhere. If
you no longer wish to receive this information, see bottom for how to
unsubscribe.

* FREE JOB POSTING SITE OF THE MONTH

JobsOnline is one of the few large career portals that allows
completely free job posting. I always get responses to whatever type
of req I post here.
http://www.jobsonline.com

PortaJobs is the recently launched career portal exclusively geared
to virtual and telecommuting jobs. They currently allow a free trial
posting period. If you have no such vacancies now, you may post a
company profile "promoting your commitment to flexible working
arrangements."
http://www.portajobs.com

* FREE RESUME SOURCE OF THE MONTH

Mojolin is a fairly job board specifically for Linux and Unix
experts. Both resume search and job post are completely free.
http://www.mojolin.com

CareerMagazine is the long-standing portal now owned by VerticalNet.
The site has a nifty distance radius search functionality to limit
resume results. The catch is that the free database only contains
resumes more than 150 days old. If you want the newer resumes, you
have to pay.

* INTERNET RECRUITING TOOL OF THE MONTH

Free email is nice, but if you think your recruiting message would
have greater impact by snail-mail, try Zairmail. This web site lets
you copy/paste your document into a form, you indicate which
recipients (multiple ones are OK), and they print and mail it by 2-
day or overnight, free. The catch? They add a last page with ads and
coupons, but you pay no postage.

* GENERAL RECRUITING TIP OF THE MONTH

Andy Chan, CEO of the elite universities' alumni recruiting site,
eProNet.com, shares some solid tips for
companies looking to recruit passive candidates in 2001. It will
require actively finding and wooing them. Check out his unique ideas
at:
http://recruiting-online.com/epronet.html

* INTERNET RECRUITING NICHE OF THE MONTH

United Kingdom: It seems like more recruiting placement is going
global, and with telecommuting/teleworking on the rise, your best
placements may be from overseas. Why not start with a country
sporting a tech-savvy workforce and no language barriers? A great
resource site to start your UK contractor search is QandA at:
http://www.qanda.co.uk/contract/links.htm

For many more such sources, login to our course (see "HOW DO I LEARN
MORE?" below if you lack access) and go to:
http://www.recruiting-online.com/course1/course65.html

* RECRUITING EVENT OF THE MONTH

Normally, we profile some recruiting/HR industry conference in this
space. But to succeed in finding high-demand candidates today, grass-
roots networking with your target audience is vital. A whole mini-
industry has emerged recently in the area of informal high-tech
schmooze events. Established brands like Fast Company are doing line
extensions in this arena, as well as pure-plays emerging like
HiTechClub operating online only. One that's growing live AND online
that you may not know is Fat Thursday, which holds events regularly
in Atlanta, Boston, New Orleans and New York City:

* ADVANCED SEARCH STRING OF THE MONTH

Layoffs: You want layoff news as soon as it happens to grab those
displaced candidates (and their nervous colleagues). You could
subscribe to one of those outplacement e-newsletters like AIRS' or
visit a distressed company rumors web site like dotcomfailures.com,
but none of these let you target geographically. Searching the
document for, say, Boston doesn't bring up the companies located in
high-tech suburbs like Waltham! But this does:

1. Go to www.localbusiness.com/Search/
2. In the keywords field, type:
layoff* or downsiz* or restructur* or "shut down" or "lays off"
3. Select your city in the Region field
4. Select a recent date range if you want to find new layoff news
5. Click the Search button; you'll like the results.

To learn why this works, how to adapt Boolean search strings to other
desired candidate skilltypes or other geographic areas, login to our
course (see "HOW DO I LEARN MORE?" below if you lack access) and go
to:
http://recruiting-online.com/course1/course15a.html

* INNOVATIVE RECRUITING SITE OF THE MONTH

If you're looking for particular industry associations to network
through in order to find professionals in those niches, two big free
databases are available from the American Society of Association
Executives and AssociationCentral. These links go to their search
pages:
http://info.asaenet.org/gateway/OnlineAssocSlist.html
http://www.associationcentral.com

* RECRUITING NEWS OF THE MONTH

The BDPA Journal, the official publication of National Black Data
Processing Associates (bdpa.org) has launched a forum to help
recruiters interested in diversity IT recruitment issues to connect,
stay updated about news and trends, etc. Membership in BDPA is not
required to participate. To subscribe, send a blank email to BDPA-Recruiter-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or visit:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BDPA-Recruiter

* RECRUITING PARTNERSHIP OF THE MONTH

The Wall Street Journal's executive career site CareerJournal.com and
its collegiate counterpart CollegeJournal.com teamed up with the
National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) to exchange
content. Methinks this is a prelude to finally mounting serious
competition against category leaders Jobtrak.com and Experience.com.

* RECRUITING STATISTIC OF THE MONTH

Just 34 percent of workers are truly loyal to their employers,
according to "The 2000 Global Employee Relationship Report," recently
released by the Hudson Institute and Walker Information Global
Network. They found negligible difference in loyalty based on
location, except for these: Columbia and South Korea had very high
loyalty, while Chile, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore ran
far below average. USA ranked seventh out of 32 countries surveyed.
